New Telehealth Billing Requirements for Medicare

For our TherapyNotes clients, Medicare has made a change for billing for telehealth sessions.

  • Previously Medicare wated the Place of Service code of 11 for telehealth (as if the patient was present in your office).

  • HOWEVER, for dates of service 1/1/24 and later Medicare is adopting the place of service requirements similar to what other payers are using.

    • If the patient was at home during the telehealth session, you are to use Place of Service Code 10.

    • If the patient was not at home during the telehealth session, you are to use Place of Service Code 02.

    • MAKE SURE WHEN YOU DO THE NOTE IN THERAPYNOTES THAT YOU HAVE THE CORRECT LOCATION SELECTED FOR THE TELEHEALTH SESSION--either Telehealth POS 10 Home or Telehealth POS 02 Not Home.

    • Remember this only applies for dates of service January 1, 2024 and later!

On another note I have noticed some providers when billing for telehealth sessions are always using 02 as the Place of Service code.

Remember, most payers want 10 as the Place of service code for telehealth.  Some will want 11 still as the Place of Service code for telehealth.

If you are not sure what the requirements are for each of your payers let me know and I can review (although payers are known to change their requirements without notice!).

And remember when you have a telehealth session with a patient the first question asked is where the patient is located so you know which location to select in your note.

Thanks,
Steve
